We will speak about Israel’s faith, failure, and return. Speaking about Israel today can be confusing.
A big part of what muddles communication is not using the same definitions. What do you mean when you say Israel?
Here are some different Biblical uses of Israel:
- Israel, a man. God changed Jacob’s name to Israel in Gen 32:28. This is the first Israel. His son’s made up the twelve tribes of Israel.
- Israel, the people. Jacob’s sons and their families make up the twelve tribes of Israel. This is Israel in the flesh, native Israel, the nation of Israel.
- Israel, the land. This is geographical Israel, a place on earth. Each tribe was given an allotment of land.
- Israel, the kingdom. This is the political rule and government of Israel. They were not always aligned with God.
- Israel, the divided kingdom. After Solomon, the house of Israel described the northern tribes politically separate from the southern kingdom, house of Judah.
- Israel, the glorified servant of God (Isa 49:3). This special prophecy refers to Christ the Messiah as both representative and restorer of the nation.
- Israel, the remnant. This is faithful Israel of the heart who fulfil the law, endure suffering, and are preserved through tribulation (Deu 10:16; Rom 2:25-29).
If that wasn’t enough to discern, today we must contend with two more popular uses of ‘Israel’ that result from differing interpretations of Biblical prophecy.
- Israel, the democracy. This is the modern state formed in 1948. This is the mainly secular state that some consider to be the fulfillment of Israel’s return prophecies.
- Israel, the church. This is seen as those saved by Christ today (Jew and Gentile) that some consider to be spiritual Israel in fulfillment of God’s new covenant prophecies.
Is your head spinning yet?
In the Bible, Israel had God’s promises to be God’s people and possess God’s salvation. But who is Israel?
