Who hasn’t heard the story of Elijah in the cave, but have you heard the missing part?
In a wilderness cave, hiding for his life, thinking he was the last man faithful to God, Elijah witnesses a wind breaking rocks, an earthquake, and a fire, but the LORD was not in it. Then, the LORD speaks to him in a “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:12).
At this point, the message usually turns away from scripture and toward a lesson about hearing God’s voice amidst the storm, or how to listen carefully to hear God speak (the voice was small after all).
If you keep reading in the Bible, you can learn what’s often neglected – what the still small voice says!
You may not have heard, but what Elijah heard were three things from the LORD:
“I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.” – 1Kings 19:18, Romans 11:4
That still small voice told Elijah about the remnant of Israel! He even named some of them (Jehu, Elisha).
Apparently, what God whispered to Elijah was uttered in such a perfectly small voice that Christians fail to hear it to this day.
Just like how the remnant is left out of the Old Testament story, Christians fail to understand what God says about the remnant in the New Testament, too.
