In Christianity today there are quite a few people claiming to be prophets, going around making predictions about the future that more often than not turn out to be wrong. This crooked image makes it difficult to, as 1 Thessalonians 5:20 says, “despise not prophesyings.” But the purpose of a prophet is not simply to make predictions, as the prophets in the Bible sometimes did (accurately).
