GRACE AMBASSADORS

Waiting for a Miracle

Justin Johnson

We were at our local county fair this week while thousands of people walked by our booth. We handed out gospel tracts and sought conversations.

If you’ve ever done this kind of evangelism, you might have had this common thought: “why do so many seem uninterested in the gospel?”

There are many reasons, but the Bible describes the unbelieving as dead, deaf, and blind.

When someone cannot see with the lights on and eyes open, they are blind.

When someone cannot hear when words are spoken to their ears, they are deaf.

When someone does not have life in them, but has a body, they are dead.

Jesus, the Light and Word of God, came to earth and walked, talked, and ate with men. They all had eyes and ears, but many could not see or hear him. They were deaf and blind.

This is the normal description of a lost world. I’ve been blind, deaf, and spiritually dead in this way before, not seeking truth. I understand. But now I see, I hear the truth, and my spirit has been quickened and soul saved by trusting the gospel of Christ. It was a miracle.

One way to describe evangelism is waiting for a miracle to happen through hearing the gospel.

No, not the walking on water type of miracle. Not even the kind of miracle you can witness with your eyes.

I’m talking about the miracle of salvation that can occur for anyone through faith in the gospel. It’s a miracle that a righteous and holy God can justify the ungodly.

It does not happen every time you witness, every day, or with every person, but the words of God do open eyes and ears and bring salvation to dead men.

What is my evidence? The believers handing out material from our booth. The saints in our church. All those who are saved, who were once lost, but now are members of the Body of Christ.

They were all miraculously saved by hearing and trusting the words of God.

Don’t deceive yourself, every time a soul is saved it is a miracle! (God saves souls – not baptism, coming down front, confessions, professions, or good works.)

When you think evangelism is hard, don’t forget that miracles don’t happen every day, but they can happen any day through the preaching of the gospel of Christ.

There is no such thing as an evangelism technique that guarantees salvation. What is required is a faithful presentation of the gospel of salvation… and patience for ears to hear.

If you are willing to wait for a miracle, evangelize, and they will happen: souls will be saved. Even if you do not see them now, you will in glory (1 Thess 2:19).

For souls saved,

Justin “saved by a miracle” Johnson
