“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers.” – Romans 13:1
When Paul speaks of the responsibility of governing authorities and rulers, he starts by saying that everyone is subject to the higher powers.
Every soul includes every evildoer, enemy, friend, family, and even your local or distant governors and rulers. Every soul is to be subject to the highest powers.
Those powers do not stop with the highest courts or offices in our nation.
There are powers higher than every soul and office on earth, in heaven, over what is visible or invisible (Col 1:16).
There is One who is preeminent “far above all principality and power…not only in this world” (Col 1:17; Col 2:10; Eph 1:21) to whom all will give account one day (Rom 14:12).
Liberty and justice for all is found in Christ.
With this understanding that all men are subject to rights and truths of God, certain men appealed to the Highest Power 249 years ago:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…”
“We, therefore, … appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States…”
