Can you tell who said this in the Bible?
“Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.”
“I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.”
“ Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches,…”
“ Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.”
If you said Jesus, you get half credit, but you are technically wrong. These verses were written by David during the days recorded in the book of Samuel.
David was described as a man after God’s own heart (1 Sam 13:14). The Bible presents him as a shadow of Christ that was to come.
That means when he brought salvation to Israel (1 Sam 17), was rejected (1 Sam 18-19), fled for his life (1 Sam 20-21), and became the captain of the distressed and discontented (1 Sam 22), he was a picture of what Jesus Christ would be when he came to Israel.
Jesus said he came to fulfill the law and the prophets, and that the scriptures testify of him (John 5:39). Many of the things David said were the very words of Jesus when he walked the earth.
For those who had ears to hear the scriptures, they could see Jesus in persons such as David. When Christ came, they would hear his voice and recognize his words and actions from the scriptures they already knew.
For those who took titles and performed religious deeds but did not know the scriptures, they were doomed to repeat the same failures. They had a heart problem. They did not love the Word of God.
Studying the Old Testament is enjoyable when you know the One it speaks about.
