When The Passion movie hit the theatres many commented that the movie was emotionally overwhelming and came out of theatres weeping as the movie ended with Christ crucified on a cross. No doubt many recommitted themselves to living a holy life.
Many well-meaning but ignorant church goers all over the world weep at the cross with Mary and John asking why Christ had to die. After all he performed so many miracles and was the greatest living example of godliness.
While kneeling before the icon of a cross still bearing the body of a lifeless Jesus they proclaim, ‘Oh the truths he could’ve taught the world if only he had lived a full life on earth!’
Yet, those who see only shame and loss in the image of the cross have missed the meaning of the cross entirely!
It was purposed in the mind of God from before the foundation of the world that Christ would die. Even as early as Genesis 3:15 we see a distant foreshadowing of what Christ would accomplish at the cross.
Paul says that he does not weep but instead glories in “the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Gal 6:14).
Paul could glory in the death of Jesus since he knew the gospel of the secret of the cross. Paul understood that it was through Christ’s death on the cross that all men could receive righteousness!
“Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: “ – Romans 3:22
In one event Jesus nailed the law to the cross and provided eternal life to those that believe.
“Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;”
It is no wonder then that Paul makes such a severe statement to protect the cross of Christ to those who would ignore that glorious event.
“I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” – Gal 2:21
The only tears I shed are the tears of joy when I remember the cross, for it is by the cross whereby I am crucified to the world in Christ Jesus! Glory to God!
