Be Spiritual

As a child, I had the idea from church that being spiritual looked something like the lady that would always cry during the songs at church. She must have felt something I did not.

Having grown up, I learned from the Bible that being spiritual was not a feeling but an understanding (1 Cor 2:15).

My flesh produced a lot of feelings, but the spirit is that by which I can know the things of God (1 Cor 2:12). To be spiritual, I needed to understand.

What things of God was I supposed to understand?

The will of God (Col 1:9; 1 Tim 2:4; Eph 5:17)
The wisdom of God (1 Cor 1:21; 1 Cor 2:7; Eph 3:9-10)
The word of God (2 Tim 3:16-17; 1 Thess 2:13)
The work of God (Eph 1:18-23; Eph 2:10)

Being spiritual requires knowledge, growth, and being stablished in sound doctrine. It was not what described babes or children (1 Cor 3:1).

Spirituality is not the sensitivity to hear the “brush of angel’s wings,” but rather the strength to walk according to spiritual understanding in every circumstance.

It requires the Bible, not church bells.

For your spiritual edification,

Justin “not hooked on a feeling” Johnson
